Hedge Natural Defense Effects on Powdery Mildew

Client Summary:
MP Farms. is a commercial cultivation specialist of medical-grade herbs with 60,000 square feet of current indoor production.

Test Objective: Evaluate performance of three competing Powdery Mildew Control products:

  1. An Aloe Product (cannot disclose)
  2. An Organic Biofungicide (cannot disclose)
  3. Hedge Natural Defense 

Two tests were conducted over a 20 week period.

Test 1 Methods:

  • Three identical plant strains were selected and planted in rows of three, one strain per row, duplicated on two tables.
  • Two rooms were utilized with controlled temperature, lighting, air conditioning and humidity.
  • Each row per table received application of one of the three Powdery Mildew Control products. Manufacturer application instructions were followed exactly.

Test 1 Observations as reported by MP Farms expert:

  • Both the Aloe and HND products produced a deeper green color on the leaves as well as a more vibrant plant look.
    • The Biofungicide showed no physical change or color difference.
  • At week six we noticed small outbreaks in the Biofungicide rows.
    • We allowed the Powdery Mildew to stay without removing the plants.
  • By week 9 the Biofuncgicide rows in both rooms had about a 7 to 10% loss due to PM.
  • Both the Aloe and HND had no PM.
  • We did not notice any weight increase compared to our usual production. An average grower or low end producer would probably see significant weight increases.
  • By week 9 the Biofungicide rows in both rooms had about a 7 to 10% loss due to PM.

Test 2 Methods:
Three identical strains were selected and separated into three separate, dedicated rooms - one strain per room. Table, lights, A/C, humidity and temperature setup mirrored Test 1.

Each room received one of three test products:

  1. An Aloe Product (cannot disclose)
  2. An Organic Biofungicide (cannot disclose)
  3. Hedge Natural Defense 

All three products were applied per manufacturing spec and followed exactly.

Test 2 Observations as reported by MP Farms experts:

CRITICAL NOTE: About week 5 we had a city loss of power for about 6 hours.

  • The Biofungicide room showed Powdery Mildew signs within hours of the power coming back on.
  • By week 7, 20% of the room had to be removed. By week 9 we had lost about 30% total.
  • At week 8 we found about 9 plants in the Aloe room with small Pockets of PM.
  • The Hedge Natural Defense room went the full term with no PM signs at all.

Production Results:

  • The HND room produced our normal weight.
  • The Aloe room was down in weight by about 5%
  • The Biofungicide room was significantly less.

Conclusion & Action Plan:
We have now removed the biofungicide product from all our facilities and have mainly switched to Hedge Natural Defense.

Although we are still testing the Aloe on a very small test basis we do feel the HND is a far superior product than Biofungicide or any other PM control product on the market today. I would suspect we will stop using the Aloe entirely by our next cycle.

We also feel that the HND if applied with their electrostatic sprayer, is extremely efficient and will use less product than the required Biofungicide amount.
